Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed
Professor

Dr. Kazi Matin Ahmed obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. Degrees in Geology from the Department of Geology, Dhaka University in 1982 and 1985 respectively. He started his career in 1985 as a Junior Hydrogeologist with a USA based Consulting Company and worked at the National Water Plan Project of Bangladesh. He joined Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission in September 1985 and worked for the exploration of radioactive minerals in NE Bangladesh. He joined the Department of Geology, Dhaka University as a Lecturer in October 1987. He went to the UK in September 1990 to undertake his Ph.D. Research at the University College London under Commonwealth Scholarship. On successful completion of the research, the University of London awarded him Ph.D. in Hydrogeology in December 1994. He returned to Dhaka in September 1994 and joined his previous job as a Lecturer. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the same department in October 1994. He was appointed as an Associate Professor of Geology in January 1999.

Since his return to Dhaka University on completion of his Ph.D. Degree, Dr. Ahmed has developed active research programs in the field of groundwater studies. His research interests include Hydrogeochemistry, Isotope Geochemistry, Contaminant Hydrogeology and Environmental Aspects of Groundwater Development. So far he has supervised a number of Local and Overseas Students M.Sc. theses in the field of Hydrogeology. Also he has completed a number of research funded by different agencies.

Dr. Ahmed has developed strong research links with National and International Organizations and are actively involved in the field of Hydrogeological research. His research partners at home include Bangladesh Water Development Board and the Department of Public Health Engineering. Overseas organizations include the University College London, and British Geological Survey of the UK, the Royal Institute of Technology of Sweden, Columbia University of the USA. He has also research links with universities in India, Japan, Belgium and Holland.

So far he has published more than 20 papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings. He has also jointly authored number of scientific reports and manuals. He has presented papers in conferences in Nepal, UK and Brazil and as invited speakers in Sweden, Belgium and Holland.

Dr. Ahmed is an Overseas Fellow of the Geological Society of London, Member of International Association of Hydrogeology and Life Member of Bangladesh Geological Society. He is an active member of the Geohazard Research Group, Department of Geology, Dhaka University. His biography has been accepted for publication in the 21st Edition of Who's Who in the World.

He has also participated in a number of consultancy works. The latest one was the Groundwater Studies for Arsenic Contamination in Bangladesh where he provided consultancy to the Department of Public Health Engineering on behalf of Mott MacDonald Limited and British Geological Survey.

The main focus of his current research is the Arsenic Contamination of Bangladesh Groundwater where he is working in collaboration with National and International Organizations.
