Professor Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane has an outstanding academic career. He obtained First Class securing First Position in both the B. Sc (Hons.) and M. Sc (Thesis) examinations. Since June 2003 he has been working as a faculty member in the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. At present he is serving as a Professor of Botany, Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Dhaka.  

A.  Academic qualifications: Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Dhaka (2008), M.Sc. (Thesis) in Botany obtained First class (First Position) from the University of Dhaka (1998), B.Sc. (Hons.) in Botany obtained First class (First Position) from the University of Dhaka (1997), HSC from Notre Dame College, Dhaka obtained First Division (1993) and SSC from Gafargaon Islamia Govt. High School obtained First Division (1991).

 

B. Teaching experience (2003 - Date): Has been teaching both at graduate and post-graduate levels for more than 15 years. Holding the positions of Professor (22 July 2013 to Date), Associate Professor (18 October 2008 to 21 July 2013), Assistant Professor (26 September 2005 to 17 October 2008) and Lecturer (30 June 2003 to 25 September 2005) of the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka. He is also serving as a Part- time Teacher of Basic Science and Environment, Department of Marketing (01 July 2013 to 31 December 2016) and Department of Accounting & Information Systems (01 July 2017 to till date), Faculty of Business Administration, University of Dhaka. An accomplished and innovative researcher and Botany Professor  specializing in Phycology, Limnology and Hydrobiology.

 

C. Administrative responsibilities (2003-2013): Having administrative experiences of 10 years dealing with 900 students of Amar Ekushey Hall, University of Dhaka in the capacity of  (i) Acting Provost at Amar Ekushey Hall, University of Dhaka for several times during the period of House Tutorship at Amar Ekushey Hall, University of Dhaka (ii) House Tutor at Amar Ekushey Hall, University of Dhaka( 02 December 2006 to 19 November 2013) and (iii) Assistant House Tutor at Amar Ekushey Hall, University of Dhaka(20 November 2003 to 01 December 2006).

 

D. Field of specialization and research experience (1998- date):  Environmental science specially in Ecosystem and Biodiversity expertise. Having research experiences over 17 years.  During his M.Sc. studies (session 1998-1999) he conducted a piece of research on a topic entitled “ Seasonal distribution of Vibrio cholerae in association with algal population in a cholera endemic area of Bangladesh’’. This work was carried out in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). He has research experience on different aspects of ecology such as fresh water, Brackish water and Marine water ecology ; wetlands of Bangladesh namely haor, natural and artificial lakes, rivers, ponds and other natural habitats; wetland macrophytes with emphasis on taxonomy, identification, biochemical studies and aquaculture practices; sub-littoral algal flora of St. Martin’s Island; seasonal variation and taxonomy of phytoplankton; hydrobiology and isolation and identification of microorganisms from natural environment; limnological studies with special reference to impact of major and minor elements on plankton and macrophytes community; algal taxonomy; biodiversity and conservation .

 

He was awarded his PhD for his research on ‘‘The growth, regeneration and ecology of some selected wetland macrophytes of Bangladesh’’.

 

He supervised 20 M.S. theses and now supervising 2 M.S. and 24 Ph.D. theses in the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka on various problems related to Ecology in Bangladesh. He is also an external examiner of PhD theses evaluation of foreign countries.

Training courses/conferences: Referring to advanced training course Prof. Alfasane has participated in different courses viz., (i) The International Soil Testing and Formulated Fertilization Training Course for ASEAN and Southeastern Asia (Oct. 10 to 23, 2007, in Beijing, China) held by National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of the People’s Republic of  China. (ii) Training courses entitled “Oceanography: Principles and Applications” from May 11 to June 30, 2005. Organized by National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) under Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.(iii) Special training course in SPSS program for Biological Science, organized by Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT) from 21 July to 19 August 2003, University of Dhaka.(iv) Workshop on "Genomics & Proteomics", organized by HEQEP Funded Project from  July 16 to 24, 2012, University of Dhaka.(v) Workshop on "Plant Genetic Transformation, in situ Hybridization and Bioinformatics", organized by HEQEP Funded Project from October 06 to 14, 2012, University of Dhaka.(vi) Cyanobacteria in freshwater" in a meeting to prepare a teaching manual on Drinking water contaminants in Bangladesh: arsenic, cyanobacteria, fluoride,   manganese and pesticides, as one of the panel of reviewers at  Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, 22-23 and 29-30 November 2007, Organized by World Health Organization (WHO). He has also attended different scientific conferences.

 

F.  Publications:  So far 50 research papers and 07 books have been published, out of which some have made outstanding contribution in Biological Sciences. These are: (i) Sublittoral seaweed flora of the St. Martin’s Island, Bangladesh, (ii) Limnological studies of three natural lakes of Bangladesh, (iii) Reported more than 80 species of phytoplankton (primary producer) for the first time for Bangladesh and (iv) 14 (Fourteen) algal taxa were added as new to science. Ph.D. Dissertation:

The growth, regeneration and ecology of some selected wetland macrophytes of Bangladesh

Considering the importance of some aquatic macrophytes in Bangladesh and their gradual declination of the population from the natural habitats, ex- situ culture studies of five selected species, namely, Nymphaea rubra Roxb., Enhydra fluctuans Lour., Ipomoea aquatica Forsk., Hygroryza aristata  (Retz.) Nees ex Wight & Arn. and Limnocharis flava (L.) Buch. were carried out and at the same time biochemical composition of these aquatic macrophytes were investigated.

 

MS Thesis:

Seasonal distribution of Vibrio cholerae in association with algal population in a cholera endemic area of Bangladesh

Explained phytoplankton act as a reservoir of cholera and influence in maintaining endemicity and seasonality of cholera  in Bagladesh. The study further suggested that water bodies were heavily polluted and responsible for the diarrhoeal diseases.
