Scholarships and Awards

In recognition of his extraordinary merit and exceptional contribution in the area of scientific research, Prof. Ahmed received several scholarships and awards both from national and international institutions. He was awarded DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Scholarship for Ph.D. program, JSPS, Senior DAAD and prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowships to pursue Post-doctoral research in Japan and Germany respectively. He went to Berlin for another three terms to pursue advanced research on natural product chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Technical University Berlin and Free University Berlin respectively under the auspices of follow up program of DAAD and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship. AvH Foundation has offered him another very prestigious senior fellowship to pursue advanced research on Glucocorticoid receptor interactions with glucocorticoids and differential agonists: new aspects of mechanism of action at the Institute of Pharmacology, FU Berlin. He will avail himself the fellowship by next October or November this year   For outstanding research Dr. Ahmed has been awarded Bangladesh Academy of Science Gold Medal in 2007, A.R. Chowdhury Memorial Gold Medal in 1987, H.H. Rahman Gold Medal in 2001 and University Grants Commission Award in 1991. Till now he has published more than 100 scientific research articles mostly in prominent international journals. He is a popular columnist and has been writing columns for the last 40 years on regular basis on different issues, particularly on health, medicines and current national and international topics in different leading national daily newspapers. He is also a prominent contributor and talks on regular basis in different electronic media on topics related to education, science, public health and medicines. So far he has published 9 important books. He attended as many as 50 national and international seminars, conferences and workshops as resource person delivering lectures and expertise contributor. Prof. Ahmed visited many countries like Germany, Austria, Great Britain, France, Poland, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, USA, Canada, Japan etc. on academic and research purpose.

Fields of Research

  1. Studies on the Drug Utilization and Cost Efficiency of Health Facilities in Bangladesh
  2. Bioactivity Guided Isolation, Purification, Characterization and Pharmacological Screening of Natural Products from Medicinal Plants
  3. Glucocorticoid Receptor Interaction with Glucocrticoids and Differential Agonists: New Aspects of Mechanism of Action
  4. Penetration pattern of steroid drugs like dexamethasone in reconstructed human skins by using Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy and HPLC-MS/MS

Isolated, purified and elucidated structures of about 150 new compounds from different medicinal plants widely used in Bangladesh. Some of the new compounds have shown potent analgesic, antiinflammatory and diuretic activities. A few of the new compounds are under advanced investigations for their pharmacological activities.
