Details of Dr. Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed


Biography:

Professor Dr. Kazi Matin Ahmed of the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka is a leading researcher on groundwater in Bangladesh with focuses on impacts of urbanization on groundwater; microbiological contamination of groundwater from onsite sanitation; occurrence and mitigation arsenic contamination in groundwater; occurrence and mitigation of salinity in groundwater. He completed his BSc (Honours) and MSc degrees in Geology from the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka in 1983 and 1985 respectively. He started his career as a Junior Hydrogeologist with the National Water Plan Project of Bangladesh in January 1985. He worked in Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission as a Geologist from September 1985 to October 1987 before joining Dhaka University as a Lecture of Geology. He went to the UK for his higher studies under the award of Commonwealth Scholarship in 1990 and got PhD in Hydrogeology from University of London in 1994.On his return from the UK, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 1994, Associate Professor in 1999 and Professor in 2003 at the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka. He has been involved in research on various aspects of groundwater in collaboration with National and International Institutions and Organizations. Recently completed major projects include the landmark National Hydrogeochemical Survey in Bangladesh with the British Geological Survey, UK; Hydrogeochemistry and Health Effect of Arsenic and Manganese with Columbia University, USA; and Sustainable Arsenic Mitigation with the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. He was also conducted postdoctoral research at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden under the Linneaus Palme Fellowship funded by Swedish International Development Agency; Osaka City University Japan under the Invitation Fellowship of the Japan Society for Promotion of Science and University College London under the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship funded by the Department for International Development, UK.

His current research includes applications of Managed Aquifer Recharge in Coastal Aquifers of Bangladesh for increasing water access in collaboration with the Acacia Water and Department of Public Health Engineering; Delta-MAR with University of Utrecht and Technical University of Delft, Netherlands; Underground Taming of Flood for Irrigation with IWMI; Sustainability of Groundwater Irrigation and Food Security in the Barind Tract, Bangladesh with University College London; Health Impacts of Salinity with Imperial College London and Geochemistry and Health Effects of Arsenic with Columbia University, USA. Apart from conducting research, he also acts as advisors/consultants for national agencies like the Department of Public Health Engineering and Policy Support Unit, Local Government Division, Government of Bangladesh. He also provided consultancy services for the Department for International Development, UK; Danish International Development Agency; Asian Development Bank; World Health Organization; World Bank; Japan International Cooperation Agency; United Nation’s Children Fund. He was a member of Bangladesh Government’s inter-ministerial committee on use of deep aquifer for arsenic mitigation. Currently he is member of the Groundwater Task Force of the Water Resources Planning Organization under the Ministry of Water Resources. Currently he is also a Member of the Technical Advisory Committee on Groundwater Quality of the World Health Organization.

He has authored/coauthored more than 150 papers published in national and international peer reviewed journals. He has contributed more than 50 chapters in books and conference proceedings. Publications authored and co-authored by KMA have been cited more than 6400 times. He has been involved in organizing National and International conferences on various aspects of groundwater and has presented invited/key note papers at different conferences at home and abroad. He has supervised a large number of graduate students from home and abroad. He is life member of Bangladesh Geological Society, Geological Society of India, International Association of Hydrogeologists and Association of Global Groundwater Scientists.
